Non-defining relative clauses give extra information about someone/something.
Sentences make sense without them.
We use commas to separate the caluse from the rest of the sentence. We don't use that
in these clauses.
Examples:
Gerald Jones, who was a well-known local artist, died yesterday at the age of 73.
We went to the Louvre museum, which is in Paris
Defining relative clauses
Defining relative clauses identify the person/thing the speaker is talking about.
They are necessary for the sentence to make complete sense.
Example:
This is the girl who goes to the same school as your brother
That's the place where I learned how to swim
The pronoun whose
We use whose to talk about possessions or relationships.
We can use it in defining and no-defining relative clauses.
Is the boy whose sister is getting married next week?
Michael, whose brother has just got married, is very happy. back
